Crooks who steal packages from the porches of unsuspecting residents could face time behind bars. Currently, porch piracy is a misdemeanor and seldom means jail time. As online shopping increases in popularity, so do the reports of stolen property. New legislation in the California Assembly could turn petty thieves into felons. The proposed law would classify a porch, driveway, patio, stoop, or enclosed yard an extension of the home and effectively turning porch pirates into burglars. Burglary is a felony leading to a year in jail.
