S.M.P.D. Delays Release Of Records

A new law designed to increase transparency on police misconduct requires departments statewide to release records of officer misconduct. The San Luis Obispo Police Department released some records dating back five years. The Grover Beach Police Department released reports and video footage of a 2017 fatal officer-involved shooting. Under S.B. 1421 police must report incidents of police shootings, officers who engaged in sexual assault, dishonesty, and force used by an officer that ended in bodily injury or death.” Santa Maria P.D. says the City Attorney has advised them to delay releasing any materials due to legal questions.
